Fear can be the most debilitating of all emotions. When a decision is made from fear then it is almost always the wrong course of action.
Great leaders cannot be fearful and make good decisions. With trusted guides like Mary Key, we can move from the posturing of fear to a position of courageous leadership.

That's true Gordon - it's a question of whether you can stand staying or overcome your fear and take a new leap.

It is tough to make a jump from a "copmfortable" career to another position at the moment. What if the new venture fails, and now you have to look for a job? Some feel it is much safer to remain with the "comfortable" position.

Great Post, Mary! The recent economic events have raised a huge question about the competence of our leaders. Now more than ever, we need courageous leaders at the helm of organizations, corporations and government entities. The unprecedented rate of change coupled with the complex interdependent web of a global marketplace calls for a quality of
leadership that can maintain integrity and sustain results. The challenge
of contemporary leadership is not easily answered through old strategies
or past successes. We have now entered uncharted territory which requires our leaders to be courageous enough to take calculated, well thought out risks that have all of our best interests at heart.

Very good article. We really need more people and particularly leaders who will act courageously rather than acting only in their own best interest.

Eileen - so glad you found the information helpful. You are such a seasoned coach, what are some of the challenges you see leaders facing?

Thanks for this great article, Mary. I found the questions especially helpful. Each one of them might take quite a quite a while to ponder and answer. I think it would be well worth the effort, though, because answering these questions up front will avoid having to answer them later when we face an obstacle and are wondering what the heck we are doing. Recalling our answers will be re-motivating. It's lonely being courageous.... Answering these questions will help us to be clear and strengthen us to "take immediate and responsive action" (be heroic) when we need to. I'm going to ask one of my clients these questions next week, as he is embarking on a very risky reorganization to achieve his organization's vision.
